Louis Braille

Louis Braille was born in 1809 as a normal boy in the French town Coupvray. At age three, he accidentally stuck an iron awl in his eye, which eventually caused his total blindness.

Thanks to his intelligence and perseverance, he could soon overcome his handicap and in 1819, he was allowed to continue his studies at the Institut National des Jeunes Aveugles in Paris.

Dissatisfied with the system used in the institute to teach the blind to read, Braille developed a new system based on a codifying system by the French captain Charles Barbier de la Serre. Thus, braille was invented in 1824, Braille was 15 years old.
