Gaetano Donizetti (1797-1848)
Gaetano Donizetti (1797-1848) was unmistakably the greatest Italian opera composer of his generation following the death of Bellini in 1835. Like Rossini, he composed comic and serious operas, both of which were successful. His style is more dramatic and connected to the text than his predecessors. His original melodies and rhythms are a direct source of inspiration for Giuseppe Verdi.
Although Donizetti was very productive and enjoyed great success during his active years, the great popularity did not last and he often came in third after Rossini and Bellini. It wouldn't be until the middle of the 20th century, thanks to the celebration of his 100th anniversary, that he regained greater appreciation and his work made a true revival.
This is the Torquato Tasso manuscript from our collection. There are two volumes with quite a few corrections, notes and an addition of some printed pages. This opera was first performed in Rome in 1833. The text is by Jacopo Ferretti (1784-1852).
